Mosul Crisis - the Atlas of Displacement
As the offensive by the military forces of Iraq to retake the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) territories in Mosul city and large areas in Ninewa Governorate was launched in October 2016, the response to the humanitarian crisis required daily information regarding the subsequent displacement of the population.
To address this need, IOM DTM officially launched the Emergency Tracking system in the beginning of the operations, capturing numbers on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Returnees, as well as locations of displacement and origin, movement trends, and shelter arrangements.
This interactive atlas provides an overview of the crisis throughout three phases in time, starting with an overview of the situation before Mosul operations. The platform allows users to understand and read the geographic dimension of the displacement and its patterns. Each phase includes snapshot maps displaying the number of displaced families by location, main movements, and IDP shelter types.
